Why Thug Life Disappointed Fans? A Clear Breakdown

When Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan (STR), Trisha, and others, released on June 5, 2025, it arrived with enormous expectations.

Fans hoped for a grand reunion after the iconic film Nayagan. Yet, Thug Life soon fell short—both critically and commercially. Here’s why:

  1. Confusing & Weak Storytelling?

Despite a strong premise—a gangster kingpin raising an adopted son who betrays him—many criticized the screenplay as disjointed and lacking emotion.

Reviews described the film as “meandering,” with a second half that dragged and lost momentum. Audiences said they couldn’t emotionally connect: “nonstop dialogues get tiring” and the slow pace became a major issue. Even Mani Ratnam’s direction, usually praised, was seen as weak this time.

  1. Pacing Problems & Half-Baked Characters

Strong actors like STR and Trisha were underused. STR’s early scenes showed promise, but later his role felt unresolved. Trisha’s romance subplot was seen by many as unnecessary or even misogynistic. A critic noted, “characters felt half-baked… no emotional payoff”.

  1. Box Office Decline

The film opened with a respectable 17 crore net on Day 1 in India. But by Day 2 collections dropped more than 50% 7 crore, and fell further during the weekend. After two weeks, worldwide box office total barely reached 85 crore—far below its 300 crore budget. Trade analysts estimate losses over 100 crore.

  1. Technical Merits but No Emotional Impact

The film boasted top technicians: AR Rahman’s music, Ravi K. Chandran’s visuals, and Sreekar Prasad’s editing. Critics agreed that the production looked upscale. However, Rahman’s background score was considered weak, and editing felt sluggish.

  1. High Expectations & Tough Comparisons

Audiences naturally compared Thug Life to Kamal Haasan’s recent hits (Vikram grossed ₹400 crore, Indian 2 ₹151 crore) and Mani Ratnam’s epics (Ponniyin Selvan and its sequel earned over ₹800 crore combined). Against such yardsticks, Thug Life appeared weak in story, execution, and emotional impact.

Maniratnam’s Apology

In an recent interview, maniratnam said “we apology” for what happened. Actually people expected another “Nayagan” from us. But here in Thug Life, the entire plot is different says the legendary director maniratnam himself.
