Deep South Indian fans have bestowed a special title upon Kamal Haasan, affectionately calling him “AANDAVAR” (The God). While some may think this nickname is exaggerated, it’s well-deserved considering Kamal’s unwavering passion for cinema. His love for filmmaking is truly boundless and unimaginable.
Kamal Haasan’s versatility knows no bounds. Apart from being a renowned actor, he has also excelled as a director, singer, musician, writer, dancer, stunt master, and more. This multifaceted talent is indeed one reason why he’s aptly called the “AANDAVAR” of Kollywood. But there’s more to it. Let’s explore another reason behind this esteemed title.
Kollywood’s century-old history has indeed seen few Tamil movies nominated for the Academy Awards. The late actor and producer Sivaji Ganesan was a pioneer, taking Kollywood to the Oscars with his film “Deivamagan” in 1969, which gained recognition on the world cinema stage.
Sivaji Ganesan’s iconic triple role in Deivamagan (1969) marked a milestone, as it became the first Kollywood film to receive an Academy Award nomination. Since then, only 10 Tamil movies have been nominated for Oscars over the past 56 years, although none have taken home the award yet.
Among the 10 Tamil movies nominated for Oscars, a remarkable five belong to the illustrious filmography of Kamal Haasan. Those films are Nayakan, Thevar Magan, Kuruthi Punal, Indian and Hey Ram. The other five nominated Tamil movies are Deiva Magan, Anjali, Jeans, Visaranai and Pebbles.
