Kollywood

Cinema, often referred to as the magical world, is a prominent entertainment platform. Historically, freedom fighters utilized stage programs to spread their message. Later, they transitioned to commercial mediums. Today, cinema production has evolved into a lucrative business with substantial turnovers.

Tamil cinema, popularly known as Kollywood, has crossed its 100th anniversary. Interestingly, Chennai, the present-day city, has deep roots connecting it to the early days of cinema. Even now, Chennai remains a dream city for cinema enthusiasts. Notably, Madras, the former name of Chennai, is the birthplace of South Indian cinema.

Warwick Major, a pioneering figure, began constructing a theater on Mount Road in Madras in 1899. After a significant effort, the theater was completed. Keechaka Vadham, produced and directed by Nataraja Mudhaliar, is recognized as the first South Indian movie.

However, it was not until the late 1930s that the first talkie film was released. Kalava, released in 1932, holds the distinction of being the first South Indian movie with talkie portions.

Initially, mythological stories dominated the cinematic landscape. Later, during the era of M.K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, South Indian cinema witnessed a shift towards diverse storylines. Bhagavathar became the first superstar of Tamil cinema.

Since the early 1900s, Kollywood has grown significantly, officially celebrating its 107th anniversary. Many talented actors have contributed tirelessly to elevate Kollywood’s reputation on the global stage. For over 110 years, Chennai has remained a cherished destination for Kollywood enthusiasts.
