Actually this “Me Too” movement, which really began in the very westernized Hollywood Industry. And in a very soon phase it made its way to India and shook several film industries, including Tollywood (the Telugu film industry). Many general audience and cinema lovers were purely shocked when women from the industry started to speak out about their personal experiences with sexual harassment.
It was a bold and brave moment in Tollywood, where silence had been the norm for many years. And one of the first major voices in Tollywood’s Me Too wave was the controversial actress Sri Reddy. Back in 2018, Sri Reddy openly spoke about the casting couch mafia and exploitation in the Telugu industry.
And she also alleged that several top producers, directors, and actors had taken advantage of her and other struggling and upcoming actresses of Telugu Industry. Her statements created a huge controversy, and for a while, she was even banned by the Movie Artistes Association (MAA). However, her voice gained attention and support from various parts of the country.
Soon after Actress Sri Reddy’s revelations, a few more women from the Telugu industry shared their own dark stories. Most of them chose to stay anonymous, fearing backlash and loss of work. Still, their stories were heard by the public and media. Some male actors and directors were questioned, but only very few were officially investigated.
Critics say that the industry did not do enough to support the victims. While the impact of the movement in Tollywood was not as strong as in some other industries, it did start important conversations. People began to discuss the power imbalance, the need for safer working environments, and better rules against harassment. Film bodies were pressured to take complaints seriously and to create support systems for survivors.
After few bold filmmakers and top actors publicly supported the women who are victimized and demanded change. Some new guidelines were introduced in film sets, and workshops on gender sensitivity were organized. Though change has been slow, small steps have been taken.
The Me Too movement brought a hidden issue into the open. It gave a voice to those who were silenced for years. In Tollywood, a culture of fear and silence was challenged. Though many cases are still unresolved, a message has been sent – that silence will no longer be accepted.
Change is never easy, especially in an industry that has been run in a certain way for decades. But thanks to the courage of a few women, the first steps toward a safer Tollywood have been taken.
