Salman Khan, one of India’s biggest film stars, is known for his blockbuster films, massive fan following, and philanthropic work through his Being Human Foundation.
However, his career has been equally marked by high-profile controversies that often made bigger headlines than his movies. While Salman remains a beloved figure for millions, these incidents have cast long shadows over his stardom.
Here’s a look at the top three controversies that have defined and challenged Salman Khan’s public image.
1. The 1998 Blackbuck Poaching Case
During the filming of Hum Saath Saath Hain in 1998, Salman Khan and some of his co-stars were accused of hunting endangered blackbucks in Rajasthan, a serious violation under the Wildlife Protection Act.
The case stretched for more than two decades. In April 2018, a Jodhpur court convicted Salman and sentenced him to five years in prison, while his co-actors Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam, and Tabu were acquitted. Salman spent two nights in jail before being granted bail. The case is still pending in appeal.
This controversy not only damaged Salman’s reputation but also strained his relationships within the industry. It became symbolic of Bollywood’s often careless attitude toward environmental and legal concerns.
2. The 2002 Hit-and-Run Case
One of the most infamous incidents in Salman Khan’s life occurred in the early hours of September 28, 2002, when his car allegedly ran over five people sleeping on a pavement in Bandra, Mumbai. One person was killed and four were injured. Salman was accused of drunk driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The case dragged on for over a decade, with multiple twists and intense media scrutiny. In 2015, the Sessions Court convicted him and sentenced him to five years in prison. However, the Bombay High Court later acquitted him, citing lack of sufficient evidence and inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case. This acquittal led to public outcry and debates over celebrity privilege in the justice system.
3. Assault Allegations and Personal Turmoil
Salman Khan’s personal life has also drawn criticism, especially his volatile relationships with leading actresses. One of the most talked-about was with Aishwarya Rai. Their relationship turned toxic after their breakup in 2002, with Aishwarya publicly accusing Salman of harassment, emotional abuse, and physical threats. She stated in interviews that he couldn’t accept the breakup and that she had to endure his aggressive behavior.
This incident divided public opinion—many criticized Salman for his alleged behavior, while others supported him. Over time, similar reports of heated arguments with other colleagues and journalists surfaced, further tarnishing his image as an unpredictable and temperamental star.
