Tollywood, the Telugu-language film industry, has witnessed a tremendous transformation over the last 15 years. With grand productions, compelling storytelling, and larger-than-life performances, Telugu cinema has emerged as a major force in Indian and global markets. Among numerous successful films, a few have broken box office records and redefined the commercial potential of South Indian cinema.
Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion (2017)
Worldwide Gross : Over 1,800 crore
Directed by S.S. Rajamouli, Baahubali 2 is not just the highest-grossing Tollywood film, but also one of the most successful Indian films of all time. This epic action drama served as the sequel to Baahubali: The Beginning and resolved the cliffhanger that had intrigued audiences worldwide — “Why did Kattappa kill Baahubali?”
The film blended mythological grandeur with cutting-edge visual effects and featured powerful performances by Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty, and Ramya Krishnan. It set new benchmarks in production design, storytelling, and box office reach. The movie’s success elevated the Telugu industry onto the global stage and proved that Indian cinema could compete with the world’s biggest blockbusters.
RRR (2022)
Worldwide Gross: Over 1,300 crore
Another masterpiece from S.S. Rajamouli, RRR is a fictional tale based on two real-life Indian freedom fighters — Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem. With Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr. in the lead roles, the film delivered a stunning mix of action, drama, and patriotic fervor.
RRR was praised for its cinematic brilliance and emotional depth. It enjoyed massive success internationally, especially in Japan, the U.S., and the U.K., and even won an Oscar for Best Original Song (Naatu Naatu), bringing rare global acclaim to a regional Indian film. Its roaring success at the box office reaffirmed Tollywood’s ability to create world-class cinema.
Baahubali: The Beginning (2015)
Worldwide Gross: Over 650 crore
The first installment in the Baahubali franchise laid the foundation for what would become one of Indian cinema’s most iconic duologies. Baahubali: The Beginning took the audience into the world of Mahishmati, introducing characters, conflicts, and lore that felt both fresh and mythic.
The film broke regional barriers and gained nationwide popularity, creating unprecedented buzz for a Telugu film. It also marked the rise of Prabhas as a pan-Indian star and showcased how regional films could achieve universal appeal through quality content and visionary direction.
Saaho (2019)
Worldwide Gross: Around 430 crore
Though not a purely Telugu film (it was a multilingual release), Saaho had its core production and star power rooted in Tollywood, with Prabhas playing the lead. Directed by Sujeeth, this high-octane action thriller combined stylish visuals, heavy-duty stunts, and an ensemble cast including Shraddha Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, and Arun Vijay.
Following the colossal success of Baahubali, there was immense curiosity surrounding Prabhas’s next move, and Saaho capitalized on that buzz. While the film received mixed reviews for its story, it performed impressively at the box office, especially in international markets. It confirmed Prabhas’s status as a bankable star beyond language and region.
